Voce, Louise

BIOGRAPHY

Original picture book artwork by Louise Voce is available for purchase from Children’s Book Illustration.

Louise trained at Liverpool Polytechnic where she graduated with a first class honours BA in Graphic Design. She then went on to obtain an MA in Graphic Design at Manchester Polytechnic. Since then she has freelanced in London. Her jobs have included work for The Sunday Times, Radio Times and BBC Publications as well as her children’s books for David Bennett Books and Walker Books. Louise takes years to produce her children’s books, but the results are well worth the wait. Her books include Hello, GoodbyeThe Quangle Wangle’s Hat and The Owl and the Pussy Cat. There have been several illustrated versions of this poem, but few have caught so perfectly the silliness and spirit of the master of nonsense. Louise’s ebullient pictures are filled with an infectious vitality and reveal an eye for the absurd that is a joy to behold.

In 1980 she won the Golden Pen of Belgrade, which is an award for best illustration.

The Quangle Wangle’s Hat, written by Edward Lear and illustrated by Louise Voce.

First published in 2006 by Walker Books Ltd.

“The rhyme still dances off the page as much as it ever did and children new to Lear will be in fits. Illustrator Louise Voce has clearly delighted in giving them new life.” Liverpool Echo

Following on from Louise’s magnificent interpretation of Edward Lear’s The Owl and the Pussycat, the illustrations in this book are as delightful as ever.

Williams, Marcia

BIOGRAPHY

Original picture book artwork by Marcia Williams is available for purchase from Children’s Book Illustration.

“Williams is one of our very best retellers of the classics.” The Independent on Sunday

Marcia Williams has written and illustrated numerous books since The First Christmas was published in 1987. Many of these have been retellings of classic stories – from the Greek Myths to Shakespeare – illustrated in her distinctive comic-strip style. Marcia recently created Archie’s War, a child’s scrapbook of WW1 and Flossie’s Secret War Diary, an account of WW11 as seen through the eyes of young Flossie Albright. Both books have won awards and inspired many children to create their own scrapbooks and diaries.

When working on a new book, Marcia’s first aim is to develop a strong story that can be read aloud even without the pictures. Once the story is in place, the pictures, bubble text and humour have the strong roots needed to hold the book together. Marcia did a watercolour course at Richmond College and works mainly in that medium, although she has recently been experimenting with everything from crayon to collage.

Marcia lives in London and Lyme Regis with her dogs, Gracie and Archer. She has two grown-up children and four grandchildren. Marcia has an MA in Children’s Literature and is a Fellow of the English Association and is particularly keen to make reading and visual literacy accessible to children of all interests and abilities. She enjoys visiting schools, where she shares her enthusiasm for books with a wide range of children. She is also a regular speaker at universities, festivals and
other book events.

You can find out more about Marcia from her very own website by clicking on www.marciawilliams.co.uk

At Last
Oliver Twist and other great Dickens stories, first published in 2002 by Walker Books Ltd. Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield and A Tale of Two Cities, all retold in Marcia’s exuberant comic-strip style.

“Each story is told with vivid imagination and lively language – a great introduction to some classic stories.” Junior Magazine

We are selling all of the stories listed above as complete sets although I am just showing the work from Oliver Twist below. (Please contact me to view the other stories, there just isn’t the space to show them all here). Some of the stories are made up of just three spreads, others, like the story of Oliver Twist below, are made up of five spreads.

These are significant pieces of work, which will require plenty of wall space, making them ideal for schools, libraries or other public spaces – or for individuals passionate about Dickens!

Marcia’s magic is in the detail, and I am only sorry that I can’t do her illustrations justice in the thumbnails below.

Please click on the images to enlarge them or better still, click on the SLIDESHOW tab at the top of the page.

In reality the ten images shown below are five spreads, each measuring approximately 320mm x 520mm. I’m afraid that until my website hosts can sort things out, the images are out of sequence! Apologies! Please try and imagine the a&b;’s together making up a full spread. We also have the book cover as shown more clearly below.

The Amazing Story of Noah’s Ark, retold and illustrated by Marcia Williams. First published 1988 by Walker Books Ltd.

The Adventures of Robin Hood, retold and illustrated by Marcia Williams. First published 1995 by Walker Books.

It is very difficult to see the exquisite detail of Marcia’s work clearly on the website I’m afraid, despite my attempts to show details from the four pictures available, which are; Robin’s Last Arrow, The Golden Arrow, Friar Tuck and Robin Get’s a Ducking, plus the cover detail.

Craig, Helen

BIOGRAPHY

Original picture book artwork by Helen Craig is available for purchase from Images of Delight together with a selection of Angelina Ballerina limited edition prints.

Helen Craig spent her childhood in a remote part of Essex living in a tiny
thatched cottage with no electricity or running water. Her father was Edward
Craig, the writer and designer for theatre and films; her grandfather was
Edward Gordon Craig, also a theatrical designer and producer and the son of
Dame Ellen Terry. She loved drawing but “I felt rather overwhelmed by this
wealth of talent around me,” and never thought of it as a profession and did not
attend art school. Instead she was apprenticed at the age of 16 to a firm of
commercial photographers and later worked as a portrait photographer in her
own studio in London. She lived in Spain for three years and it was there that she began drawing seriously and making ceramic sculpture.

She started illustrating children’s books in 1969 – while bringing up her
small son alone – and has since then completed over sixty, including sixteen
titles about her popular mouse character Angelina Ballerina. Helen usually
works in watercolour but she illustrated The Yellow House using etchings and
aquatints. Her retelling of Aesop’s fable The Town Mouse and the Country
Mouse
was shortlisted for the 1992 Smarties Book Prize and she enjoyed the
characters Charlie and Tyler so much that she wrote Charlie and Tyler at the
Seaside
.

Helen now lives just outside Cambridge. She collects children’s books, new
and old, and hopes one day to find time to do other work – painting from
life and sculpture.

I am delighted to introduce these wonderful new Angelina Ballerina signed limited edition giclee prints produced by Aquarelle Publishing.

A limited edition is created when the number of prints reproduced is “limited” to a finite number, by the artist and the publisher to create a rarity for the benefit of the collector (in this case the edition is just 195). By combining the skill and expertise of craftsmen with the world’s leading printing technology, stunning colour saturation and definition is achieved.

Each print is individually reproduced, examined, passed and then hand embossed as a seal of the publishers approval. They are then numbered and signed by the artist to authenticate and verify its quality. A Certificate of Authenticity and an artist’s biography is supplied with each print which is presented in conservation mounts and are acetate wrapped, ready for framing.

“I find Aquarelle Publishing Ltd prints practically indistinguishable from the originals.” Charles Hind, Curator of Drawings Collection. RIBA

Dewan, Ted

Original black & white artwork by Ted Dewan is available for purchase from Images of Delight.

BIOGRAPHY

Ted Dewan has been a full-time illustrator and cartoonist since 1988. As a youngster, he lived in Lexington, Massachusetts, drawing pictures and making music. He studied engineering and electronic music at Brown University in Rhode Island and then went on to teach physics for five years at Milton Academy just south of his native Boston, where he was known as “Mr. D”. “Mr. D” went through a lot of trouble to play the part of a physics teacher and when not busy in the science lab, he directed music shows, performed his dormitory duties, and patrolled the halls, bestowing reasonable punishments only when necessary.

A British girlfriend led him to London in 1988. There, he managed to make a living drawing for The Times Educational Supplement, the Times, The Guardian, The Independent, and The Daily Telegraph. In addition, he struggled for two years part time with his solo accordion act on London’s comedy circuit. Often misunderstood and occasionally booed off the stage at such notorious venues as The Comedy Store and The Hackney Empire, his music and his artwork were nonetheless appreciated by Helen Cooper, another author/illustrator, who was especially fond of the golden egg given to him in 1992 for the Mother Goose.

After becoming a father in 1998, he decided to dedicate most of his time to writing and illustrating books. He occasionally reviews books and illustrates for The Times Educational Supplement and is a former chairman of the Children’s Writers and Illustrator’s Group (CWIG) of the Society of Authors.

Ted Dewan writes and records music, making “soundtracks” for most of his picture books. He puts the music together with slides of artwork from the books to make “Magic Lantern” shows which he screens at schools and festivals. He hopes to release more commercial recordings in the future, and has plans to put the musical slide shows on WormWorks.com.

A move to Oxford allowed him to work closely with David Fickling at David Fickling Books, a short bike ride from his home. Author Philip Pullman gave him his famous shed in 2002, with the covenant agreed that only creative work in it, and that the shed was to be passed on to another artist, writer, or musician when the time came, if it hadn’t turned to dust in the meantime. The shed was duly blessed in a ceremony in 2003 which nearly set fire to it.

Ted Dewan is now branching out into three-dimensional work, most notably, his Cyclemas Tree of 2004, a 20-foot 1.5 tonne illuminated Christmas Tree made of derelict bicycles and scaffolding.

Review on the first of the series, Amanda Craig, The Times

“The first of six rumbustiuous adventures, it enjoys Blytonesque jollities and gorgeous grotesques drawn by Ted Dewan.”

When Thomas promises to help, he and his friends travel to the wild and amazing land of the seafolk where they embark on an exciting adventure at the very depths of the ocean.

Ted DewanA beautiful stranger has arrived in Owlchurch and soon wins over the entire village. Frodite is a magical-ointmaker and has the Horns of Pan – the highest award, granted by King Pan himself. But when strange things start to occur, Thomas and the twins begin to suspect that Frodite is not all that she seems. Determined to investigate, they set off on a dangerous journey through the forest to find the twins’ wild father, the Green Man. Can he help them find answers?

Ted Dewan
Ted DewanEveryone thinks 10-year-old Thomas Trew is weird: neighbours, other kids, even his own dad. Thomas doesn’t really mind. It’s been like that ever since he can remember. Then one day there’s a dwarf in his house, and his life changes for ever. Thomas is summoned to the Hidden World – a magical place responsible for dreams, music, and imagination in the Obvious World (the human world). He soon discovers his true talents and emerges as a Rymer, able to take his place as a link between the worlds of imagination and magic and the everyday. Thomas comes to understand both, and his ‘weirdness’ becomes greatness indeed.

Firth, Barbara

BIOGRAPHY

Original picture book artwork by Barbara Firth is available for purchase from Images of Delight.

The multi award-winning illustrator of the classic Little Bear series.
“I have been very lucky, as my career in drawing is also my favourite hobby,” says illustrator Barbara Firth. And it’s a hobby that has interested her for as long as she can remember. When she was three, she began drawing plants and animals, and when she was eleven years old, her family moved to the country, enabling her to spend even more time sketching the flora and fauna around her.
After leaving school she studied pattern cutting at the London College of Fashion. She was offered a job in the Marks and Spencer design department, but turned it down in favour of a job on Vogue knitting books, producing step-by-step illustrations of knitting, crocheting and dressmaking. It was with Walker Books, however, that Barbara was able to do illustration work in her favourite field – natural history – and has gone on to illustrate many award-winning books. She now lives in Harrow, England.
“I have always been biased toward illustrating natural history, so it was a joy to be able to draw pages and pages of bears,” Barbara Firth says of her collaboration with Martin Waddell on Can’t You Sleep, Little Bear?, the first of their classic Big and Little Bear series. As part of her research, she spent hours at a zoo, carefully watching and recording the movements and habits of bears.

Barbara Firth won the Kate Greenaway Medal and Smarties Book Prize for Can’t You Sleep, Little Bear? The Little Bear series has sold over seven million copies worldwide.…
