BIOGRAPHY

Ted Dewan has been a full-time illustrator and cartoonist since 1988. As a youngster, he lived in Lexington, Massachusetts, drawing pictures and making music. He studied engineering and electronic music at Brown University in Rhode Island and then went on to teach physics for five years at Milton Academy just south of his native Boston, where he was known as “Mr. D”. “Mr. D” went through a lot of trouble to play the part of a physics teacher and when not busy in the science lab, he directed music shows, performed his dormitory duties, and patrolled the halls, bestowing reasonable punishments only when necessary.

A British girlfriend led him to London in 1988. There, he managed to make a living drawing for The Times Educational Supplement, the Times, The Guardian, The Independent, and The Daily Telegraph. In addition, he struggled for two years part time with his solo accordion act on London’s comedy circuit. Often misunderstood and occasionally booed off the stage at such notorious venues as The Comedy Store and The Hackney Empire, his music and his artwork were nonetheless appreciated by Helen Cooper, another author/illustrator, who was especially fond of the golden egg given to him in 1992 for the Mother Goose.

After becoming a father in 1998, he decided to dedicate most of his time to writing and illustrating books. He occasionally reviews books and illustrates for The Times Educational Supplement and is a former chairman of the Children’s Writers and Illustrator’s Group (CWIG) of the Society of Authors.

Ted Dewan writes and records music, making “soundtracks” for most of his picture books. He puts the music together with slides of artwork from the books to make “Magic Lantern” shows which he screens at schools and festivals. He hopes to release more commercial recordings in the future, and has plans to put the musical slide shows on WormWorks.com.

A move to Oxford allowed him to work closely with David Fickling at David Fickling Books, a short bike ride from his home. Author Philip Pullman gave him his famous shed in 2002, with the covenant agreed that only creative work in it, and that the shed was to be passed on to another artist, writer, or musician when the time came, if it hadn’t turned to dust in the meantime. The shed was duly blessed in a ceremony in 2003 which nearly set fire to it.

Ted Dewan is now branching out into three-dimensional work, most notably, his Cyclemas Tree of 2004, a 20-foot 1.5 tonne illuminated Christmas Tree made of derelict bicycles and scaffolding.

When a mysterious island emerges from the River Riddle, panic spreads through Owlchurch. It’s the Island of Ghosts, where ghosts of past Rymers dwell in afterlife. Its appearance means only one thing: a living Rymer is in mortal danger. Only one known Rymer lives. Thomas Trew.

Review on the first of the series, Amanda Craig, The Times

“The first of six rumbustiuous adventures, it enjoys Blytonesque jollities and gorgeous grotesques drawn by Ted Dewan.”

When Thomas promises to help, he and his friends travel to the wild and amazing land of the seafolk where they embark on an exciting adventure at the very depths of the ocean.

Ted DewanA beautiful stranger has arrived in Owlchurch and soon wins over the entire village. Frodite is a magical-ointmaker and has the Horns of Pan – the highest award, granted by King Pan himself. But when strange things start to occur, Thomas and the twins begin to suspect that Frodite is not all that she seems. Determined to investigate, they set off on a dangerous journey through the forest to find the twins’ wild father, the Green Man. Can he help them find answers?

Ted Dewan
Ted DewanEveryone thinks 10-year-old Thomas Trew is weird: neighbours, other kids, even his own dad. Thomas doesn’t really mind. It’s been like that ever since he can remember. Then one day there’s a dwarf in his house, and his life changes for ever. Thomas is summoned to the Hidden World – a magical place responsible for dreams, music, and imagination in the Obvious World (the human world). He soon discovers his true talents and emerges as a Rymer, able to take his place as a link between the worlds of imagination and magic and the everyday. Thomas comes to understand both, and his ‘weirdness’ becomes greatness indeed.
