Colin McNaughton was born in 1951 in Wallsend upon Tyne, Northumberland. He took a foundation course in Art in Newcastle before moving to London in 1970 to study Graphic Design at Central School of Art and Design and onto an MA in Illustration at the Royal College of Art. His first books were published in 1976 whilst still a student at the RCA. Some 80 books have followed, most of which he has both written and illustrated. Colin is now recognised as one of Britain’s foremost picture book artists. He is also a favourite author of children’s verse. The greatest influences on his work have been the comics, annuals and Saturday morning cinema serials of his childhood.

Fat Pig, Jolly Roger and Watch Out for the Giant-Killers have been produced as stage plays. The Preston books have been animated for television. He has won numerous awards for many of his books including, the 1978 Letteratura Didattica in Bologna; winner of the 1989 and 1994, British Book Design and Production Award, Children’s Book Category and shortlisted in 1993; winner of the 1991 Emil Kurt Maschler Award and shortlisted in 1988; winner of the 1995 Nottingham Children’s Acorn Award; winner of the 1995 UKRA Book Award; winner of the 1996 Stockport Schools Book Award; winner of the 1996 Smarties Gold Prize, 0 – 5 category for Oops!, and shortlisted in 1988 and 1994; winner of the Experian Big 3 Children’s Book Prize 2002 and 2003, 8 – 9 category Nottingham Libraries and shortlisted in 2001; highly commended in the 2001 Sheffield Children’s Book Award, picture book catergory, also commended in 1996 and shortlisted for this award in 1997; highly commended in the Petit Filous-Right Start Magazine Best Toy Award 1997. He has also been shortlisted for many other awards including the 1991 Earthworm Award; the 1994 She Magazine/WH Smith under 5 Book Award; the 1995 and 1997 Greenaway Medal; the 1997 Nottinghamshire Children’s Book Award; the 2000 Children’s Book Award, picture book category and the 2001 Blue Peter Book Awards in the Best Book to Read Aloud category.

Colin lives in London with his wife, Francoise.
