BIOGRAPHY

Jason Cockcroft was born in Auckland, New Zealand, and raised in Leeds, West Yorkshire. He graduated from Falmouth School of Art in 1994. During his final year he entered the annual Macmillan Prize for Illustration, winning a place in the final exhibition, where his work was noticed by the children’s literary agent, Eunice Mcmullen.

He has illustrated picture books for Bloomsbury, Hodder, Orchard Books and Frances Lincoln in the U.K., and Henry Holt, Dutton Books and Margaret McElderry Books in the United States. His books are widely published throughout Europe, Australia and Japan. He was nominated for the Kate Greenaway Award in 2004 and won the Blue Peter Book Award for his work on Geraldine McCaughrean’s retelling of ‘Pilgrim’s Progress.’ He also illustrated covers for the last three books in the Harry Potter series for Bloomsbury. In 2009 his first children’s novel, Counter Clockwise, was published in the U.S. by Harper Collins.

His work has been exhibited in Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and London.

Billywise, written by Judith Nicholls and illustrated by Jason Cockcroft was first published in 2002 by Bloomsbury Publishing Ltd.

It’s a story about the hatching of a little owl chick and his first major challenge; overcoming his fears and learning to fly.
