Latest news

Louise Power

Apologies for being so quiet of late but my dear friend and colleague, Louise Power, sadly passed away on 14th April. Those of you who knew her will remember her extraordinary passion for children's books and her deep respect for children's book illustrators. She was funny, knowledgeable and generous; compassionate, beautiful and wise - and loved by so many.

I met Louise in 1991 and shortly afterwards she introduced me to Walker Books Ltd, the children’s book publishers where she'd just started working. I joined the company early in 1992 and our friendship grew from there. As a spokesperson from Walker has said,  “Louise was often the very first contact that many artists had with Walker Books, and her fine aesthetic coupled with her keen eye discovered much new talent over the years, making her instrumental in many contemporary illustrators’ careers”. She stayed at  Walker Books for over 25 years.

When I left London and Walker Books in 2003, I knew that I couldn't set up the Gallery without Louise. By then she had started working part time to make room for her many and varied interests including establishing herself as a therapist. I felt that it was only with her outstanding knowledge of illustration alongside me that we were able to create a credible business. She established our reputation for beautifully framed work at the many exhibitions we held and expanded our list of illustrators to include rising new talents such as Laura Carlin, Natee Puttapipat, Jessica Ahlberg and Daisy Hirst, to name a few.

Visiting her in hospital shortly before her death she was as selfless as ever and preferred to hear all the news from our illustrators rather than talk about her own health issues. I will sorely miss Louise.

How to Keep a Pet Squirrel

While dipping into The Children's Encyclopedia of 1910, Axel came across a guide to procuring and caring for a pet squirrel. We have just 2 pieces of artwork left from the book!
