Riddell, Chris

BIOGRAPHY

Chris Riddell is familiar to both children and adults for his distinctive line drawings with their clever caricature, fascinating detail and often enchanting fantasy elements.

He studied illustration at Brighton Polytechnic and has illustrated several picture books including Something Else by Kathryn Cave which was shortlisted for the Smarties Prize and which won the Unesco Award. The Swan’s Stories by Brian Alderson was shortlisted for the 1997 Kurt Maschler Award and Castle Diary was shortlisted for the 1999 Kate Greenaway Medal. Pirate Diary won the Kate Greenaway Medal in 2002 and Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver won the 2004 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal.

Chris’ popularity extends to the young teenage market with his collaboration with Paul Stewart on the best selling Edge Chronicles series, the ninth of which will be published later this year. For slightly younger children his Fergus Crane adventure series, again written by Paul Stewart, has achieved critical success with Fergus Crane winning the Smarties Gold Award and Corby Flood winning the Smarties Silver Award. An extraordinary achievement which cements Chris Riddell’s position as one of the top illustrators working today.

In addition to his children’s book work, Chris is a renowned political cartoonist whose work appears regularly in The ObserverThe Literary Review and The New Statesman. One of his claims to fame is that he was the first cartoonist to depict William Hague in shorts; an illustration that William Hague subsequently bought!

Chris Riddell lives in Brighton with his wife and children.

The Da Vinci Cod: and other illustrations to Unwritten Books, first published 2005 by Walker Books Ltd. A collection over forty-five black and white sketches originally printed in The Literary Review.

“This is quite bananas and something of a hoot. So often mini books purporting to be side-splitters are anything but. Observer cartoonist Chris Riddell, though, pulls it off.” Artists and Illustrators

Alice in Sunderland, A Brief History of Tim and One Hundred Years of Solihull. All literary classics… or are they? The Observer political cartoonist Chris Riddell imagined what the world would be like if there really had been a novel called Wuthering Tights and expertly illustrated them accordingly!

Murphy, Jill

BIOGRAPHY

Original picture book artwork and black & whites from the Worst Witch series of books by Jill Murphy are available for purchase from Images of Delight.

Jill Murphy was born in London and attended the Ursuline Convent in Wimbledon which, together with the boarding school stories she enjoyed reading, provided much of the material and inspiration Miss Cackle’s Academy in the The Worst Witch, which she started when she was 15. Mildred Hubble is very much a self-portrait! She put the book on hold as she attended both Chelsea and Croydon Art Schools, but continued to write it whilst living in a village in Togo, West Africa for a year and then whilst working as a nanny back at home. The book was published when Jill turned 24 and proved an instant success. However, Jill continued working as a nanny until the publication of The Worst Witch Strikes Again prompted her to devote herself to full-time writing. The Worst Witch stories have become some of the most outstandingly successful titles on the Young Puffin paperback list and have sold more than 3 million copies. They were also made into a major ITV series. She is also well known for her picture books and was commended in the 1980 Kate Greenaway Medal for Peace at Last. A Quiet Night In was shortlisted for the same medal in 1994. She is best known for the very popular Mr and Mrs Large picture books, which detail the domestic chaos of an elephant family. Five Minute’s Peace won the 1987 Parents Magazine Best Books for Babies Award, as well as being shortlisted for the 1986 Children’s Book Award. All in One Piece was highly commended for the 1987 Kate Greenaway Award and shortlisted for the 1987 Children’s Book Award. The Last Noo-noo won the 0-5 category of the 1995 Smarties Book Prize and in the same year was shortlisted for the English 4-11 Outstanding Children’s Book of the Year, going on to win the 1996 Sheffield Children’s Book Award. It won the 1996 Gateshead Gold Award. In the same year it was adapted as a play and performed at the Polka Theatre, London.

Jill lives in Cornwall with her son.

Roberts, David

BIOGRAPHY

David Roberts was born and grew up in Liverpool. He hated school so couldn’t wait to leave and escape to Art College where he discovered an interest in pottery and fashion design. Pursuing the fashion route he studied a degree in Fashion at Manchester Polytechnic. There he developed a keen interest in hat making and went on to work for a number of years as a milliner. He still makes hats sometimes for special occasions if bribed with lots of chocolate!

David had numerous other jobs including hair washer, shelf stacker, egg fryer, coffee-maker and film extra before discovering his true calling as a children’s book illustrator. As his interest in illustration grew he worked freelance for a number of magazines and newspapers before illustrating his first children’s book Frankie Stein’s Robot by Roy Apps which was shortlisted for the Mother Goose Award.

Since then David has continued to enjoy his work as a children’s book illustrator and feels very privileged to do a job he loves and to be able to work with some fantastic authors such as Philip Ardagh, Jacqueline Wilson, Daren King and Tom Baker. He has won numerous awards including the Smarties Book Award and has twice been shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway award. His most recent works include The Troll by Julia Donaldson, Iggy Peck, Architect by Andrea Beaty and The Dunderheads by Paul Fleischman. David is also the creator of the Dirty Bertie books about a young boy with dirty habits such as picking his nose and trumping loudly – which are not autobiographical of course!

David now lives in London.

Scheffler, Axel

BIOGRAPHY

Original picture book artwork by Axel Scheffler is available for purchase from Children’s Book Illustration.

Axel Scheffler was born in 1957 in Hamburg, Germany. At school, although always good at art, he never really considered a career in illustration. But long before he began his professional life, he had won his first drawing prize for an international chocolate company – his prize was a cuddly lilac cow.

Axel went on from school to study History of Art at the University of Hamburg – but he didn’t like the course and decided to leave. Knowing that he wanted to live in another country and learn a second language, he moved to England to study illustration at the Bath Academy of Art. During his time there he spent much of his time drawing sheep and peacocks in the grounds of Corsham Court.

After graduating with a first-class degree, Axel moved to London where he began illustrating for a variety of English and German advertising companies, magazines and newspapers. He took his portfolio to a number of publishers and Faber commissioned him to illustrate The Piemakers by Helen Cresswell and The Bottle Rabbit by Bernard McCabe. In 1989, Walker asked Axel to illustrate a text by Jon Blake, You’re a Hero, Daley B.

A writer called Julia Donaldson was also writing songs for Playdays at this time and her song A Squash and a Squeeze (reissued to celebrate 10 years of the award winning partnership in June 2003) was commissioned to be a picture book. Axel Scheffler was recommended as an illustrator for the text and an award-winning team was created.

Their next book, The Gruffalo, was published in March 1999 and has already become a modern classic, selling more than 2 million copies worldwide and translated into over 20 languages. It was nominated for the Kate Greenaway Medal, and it won the 1999 Smarties Gold Medal Award for picture books and the 2000 Blue Peter Award for The Best Book to Read Aloud. It was followed by Monkey Puzzle, also nominated for the Kate Greenaway Medal, and Room on the Broom was published September 2001 and also won the 2002 Blue Peter Award for The Best Illustrated Book to Read Aloud. Axel also continues to illustrate for other authors as well, including Ian Whybrow and David Henry Wilson. The next title The Smartest Giant in Town was shortlisted for the Red House Children’s Book Award, and the Snail and the Whale was published to great acclaim and won the 2005 Blue Peter Best Illustrated Book to Read Aloud Award.

Axel Scheffler has achieved worldwide acclaim for his humorous illustrations, and his books have been translated into over 29 languages. He has enjoyed particular success in his award-winning picture book collaborations with Julia Donaldson, but is also the best-selling illustrator of novelty books such as The Bedtime Bear. More recently he has been called upon to design Gordon Brown’s annual Christmas card! (2006)

Still living in London, Axel makes frequent visits to continental Europe. His hobbies include walking, cooking and reading, and beadwork.

For interested children, further information can be found on www.gruffalo.com

How to Keep a Pet Squirrel, with text from The Children’s Encyclopedia of 1910 published by Faber & Faber October 2010.

While dipping into The Children’s Encyclopedia of 1910, Axel came across a guide to procuring and caring for a pet squirrel. Intrigued by the unlikely notion of a child attempting to keep so wild an animal, Axel created a series of delightful, beautifully finished illustrations to accompany the text.

Nick Sharratt was born in London in 1962 and trained in graphic design at St. Martin’s School of Art. He takes his inspiration from the pop and graphic art of the 1960s, which he experienced as a child. His work is split between illustrating for other writers, most notably Jacqueline Wilson, and producing his own picture books for a younger audience. Eating is one of Nick’s favourite pastimes and food often crops up in his work.

He has won numerous awards including the 2001 Children’s Book Award, the Stockport Schools Book Award for KS1, the Sheffield Children’s Book Award and the Experian Award for Eat Your Peas, written by Kes Gray. He won the overall Sheffield Children’s Book Award for A Cheese and Tomato Spider and the picture book category for the Time It Took Tom, co-written with Stephen Tucker, which also won best book in the Right Start Book Awards. I am delighted to offer signed limited edition prints of the cover from Elsie Piddock Skips in Her Sleep, written by Eleanor Farjeon and illustrated by Charlotte Voake.

There are just 150 of these prints which have been beautifully produced on 310gsm Hahnemuhle fine art etching paper and individually signed and numbered by the artist. The actual image measures 420mm x 295mm, but with mounting on top this increases to approximately 580mm x 430mm.

They come mounted and wrapped ready for framing, but we can have them framed for you if you wish. Please just ask.

Last but by no means least, they each come with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist and publisher.

Elsie Piddock Skips in Her Sleep, written by Eleanor Farjeon and published in this Treasures format in 1997 by Walker Books Ltd.

“By that most perfect of storytellers, Eleanor Farjeon, Charlotte Voake…has to be half fairy herself to produce such exquisitely delicate pictures.” The Guardian

First published in 1937, this is the classic story of Little Elsie Piddock who can skip like never so! This edition of the uplifting fairy story is the only illustrated version available – the Eleanor Farjeon Estate deeming Charlotte Voake the only illustrator who could do the story justice.

Elsie Piddock Skips in her Sleep, written by Eleanor Farjeon and illustrated by Charlotte Voake. This picture book edition was first published in 2000 by Walker Books Ltd.

Charlotte was personally selected by the nephew of the esteemed children’s book writer Eleanor Farjeon to illustrate this book.

Originally published in 1937, Little Elsie Piddock Skips in Her Sleep is the tale of a little girl who is so good at skipping that she can even outskip fairies. Her reward is a gift of great power that she uses against a very unpleasant landowner.

Please accept my apologies for the fact that the scans of the larger pieces have not reproduced well here.
